A half hour before the quarterly meeting, the
officers met briefly to discuss
certain issues pertaining to funds. Such as: the lack there
of. Several ideas were
brought forth for fundraising. They ranged from the traditional
bake sale to
matching funds from employers and placing advertising in the newsletters.
Also
discussed were plans to put in a bid for Kansas City to host a National
conference.
Local: It was a small, but interesting meeting with guest speaker
Dr.
Leone Mattioli: a pediatric cardiologist at Ku Med Center.
He first drew a
picture (with a broken arm no less!) and explained the workings of
a healthy
heart, then went on to discuss the various abnormalities. This
was an important
lecture. (Dennis McKenzie commented that he learned more about
the heart in
one hour than he ever did) It is a commonly known fact
that Turner’s individuals
are more likely to be diagnosed with heart deformations and problems
than the
general public. The two most common problems are bicuspid
valve and
coarcatation of the aorta. However, hypertension and mitral-valve
prolapse are
also seen. Happily, these problems can generally be treated with
medication and
/ or surgery. Dr. Mattioli reiterated the importance of
regular echocardiograms.
After the lecture, more business was discussed.
First and formost was the
need for ideas to bring about greater attendance, awareness and support
in
general. More people = more ideas, feed back and action.
An interesting point
to consider: the number of occurrences of Cystic Fibrosis and Turner’s
Syndrome
are roughly the same: one in 2500. However, just about everybody
has heard of
Cystic Fibrosis, while few have heard of Turner’s Syndrome.
It was a lively conversation that ranged from this
need for greater awareness
to the latest articles in Time Magazine to Nascar racing. (Don’t
ask me how that
one came up) Suggestions were also brought forth on ways to revitalize
our
meetings. Ashley brought up some good ideas for teen activities,
and is the next youth
hostess. Barb is the next adult hostess. She expressed
her happiness at this
responsibility by demonstrating her famous cart wheels; then backed
it up with a
head stand. Stay tuned for further details on the next activities.
Lisa won the raffle.
The next meeting has loosely been set for
May 12th. Carolyn and Dennis
have a separate line set up for TSSKC: 816-763-8884.
National : Currently in National news: the Society is working
on bringing about new
directives for bringing about greater awareness of Turner’s Syndrome
and work
on the new web page continues. The National Conference this year
is in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The dates being October 12, 13 and 14. It’s never too early to
start making plans to
attend! The meeting ran just a little over
with such important things to discuss. At
4:15 Dennis moved to adjourn and Barb enthusiastically seconded the
motion.
