Acting as a conduit for communication between the ranger staff of the Ozark National Forest Service in Arkansas, and the rock climbing and camping community using the Sams Throne special interest area. Why?

The Problem: Given the fact that Sams Throne will not be staffed on a regular basis, how to organize the campsite registration process for the packin-packout south ridge sites?
There should be a way to identify if the campground is full, and if not, which sites are taken. Tell us what you think!

When I was climbing at mount Rushmore/needles in SD, they had a sign in/sign out sheet that was in a box to protect it from the rain. above that was a board with a map of the area. i think this would be a good idea for sams, as most of the climbers down there are fairly trustworthy and would pay the cash. some people may be upset that the forest service would try to make money this way, and refuse to pay. without a full time ranger, this will be a big problem...

The Problem: The rangers warn that there may have to be a fee-plan to administer the cost of rehabilitation for the Sams Throne area. Many climbers oppose this, and wish to dilute the cost of the rehab with volunteer efforts, hoping to keep the area fee-free.

I have been going to Sam's Throne for many years now, and the thought of someone being there at the entrance and charging me money to access this land is heart-breaking. We need to keep it wild and keep it free for all people to access on their own will. These trails and campsites were created by people without any help from the government. Of course its not perfect but take it as it is. It is a free land, for the people to go to and recognize the beauty of this earth, not for a price. FREE! If this act does go through, and fee's will be charged, I know there will be big problems, and just make matters worse. Please keep our land free for us.

The NFS, BLM and other land managers are the last people you want to manage the land if you want to keep it pristine and wild. These are the same people who lit that huge fire in New Mexico, and continue to sell our natural resources to giant corporations for pennies on the dollar. The fee system will encourage the land managers to strive to maximize the income potential of the site. RV's are willing to pay a lot more than tenters, so look forward to a paved lot with hookups and showers. I'm not saying this will happen immediately, but it will happen.

I am originally from Minnesota, where this is happening to pristine wilderness areas. Sawmill Creek Dome, Section 13 and the Mystical Mountain area on the North Shore are undergoing commercialization right now. Former camping areas are being overtaken by million dollar homes and resorts that do not allow hiking or climbing. All this is in the Superior National Forest, which is also HEAVILY logged. Huge areas have been clearcut.

Enough of a rant? Keep ST free of professional land managers!

Lets not make Sam's Throne into a commercial site to charge and make money.

The Problem: The plans available for rehab at Sams Throne talk of an ATV road, and an improved access road to the north ridge campsites, as well as a parking lot for the south ridge campers.
Some climbers have questioned the necessity of this much pavement. Tell us what you think!

I think it is ridiculous to try to dovelope the sams throne climbing area. it is so nice to be able to go and find primitive camp sites, and climb. making dedicated planned out sites and roads and things will take away the part of sams throne that is a getaway. i am fully against this doveloping.
