Publication

It is obligatory on scientists to make known the results of their research and the method they used to obtain them so that other investigators can verify them. They do this by publishing their work in professional journals or by presenting it at professional meetings.

While this is not legally required, to keep your research to yourself is considered bad form and countrary to accepted scientific practice. Furthermore, it detracts from the credibility of the research if you are the only one who has done it.

In addition, it holds up the progress of science, because nothing can be accepted as fact until it has been verified by others. Verifiability is one of the main requirements of science.
