Roehl to follow father's footsteps
• Jeff Roehl, 6-foot-5, 280 pound, one of the top recruits from Illinois has
become what may be the last commitment for this class. Roehl is a member of
CNN/SI's dream team, which is what they call their Top 100 players list.
Jeff carries a 4.3 GPA and scored a 33 ACT. Roehl's father graduated
from Notre Dame.
DD to play for ND
• Donald Dykes, 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, CB is ND's 20th verbal. Good coverage
player who had 6 INTs this season, defends the run aggressively and is a hard
hitter. Dykes is from the same high school as current Irish CB Brock Williams.
Dykes' father played for the NY Jets and the San Diego Chargers.
All-State LB Harrison picks ND
• Tyreo Harrison, 6-foot-2, 233 pounds, was a first team all-state selection his
senior season at LB. Harrison had worked at a rush defensive end his previous two
prep years before moving to linebacker his this season. He finished with 119 tackles,
22 for loss, 11 quarterback sacks and six forced fumbles. He also carries a 3.8 grade-point
average and scored a 25 on the ACT.
Carlos Pierre-Antoine goes Irish
• Carlos Pierre-Antoine, Ranked 28th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-3, 225 pound, defensive force at Linebacker has become the 18th commitment.
Carlos carried a 3.4 grade-point average and an 1,100 SAT score. While on the track
team, his best 100-meter clocking was 10.9. Last season he had 76 tackles and 4 sacks.
According to local paper, Carlos is suppose to be as nice a guys in person, as he is
lethal on the field. Carlos is exactly the type of player we want at Notre Dame.
Carlos is from the same high school as Notre Dame standout LB Demetrius DuBose.
Mr. Football to go to Notre Dame
• Tony Fisher, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, is one of the Top Prospect coming out of the Midwest.
Tony was Ohio's Mr Football, as was former Golden Domer Marc Edwards. He rushed for 2130 yds
and 40TDs on 189 carries, that an average per carry of 11.3 yards. He rushed for 3950 in
his career. Tony was named the best player in Ohio by several recruiting analyst and made
Tom Lemming's top 100 player rankings.
Clifford makes it official
• Clifford Jefferson, Ranked 97th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
5-foot-11, 175 pounds, finished his senior season with 52 total tackles, six interceptions
and two forced fumbles. He tallied 41 tackles, six fumble recoveries and four interceptions
as a junior. Debatable, the best DB coming out this year. Jefferson is also the second cousin
of future NFLer and current Irish cornerback Allen "Awesome" Rossum.
Givens commits to Notre Dame
• David Givens, Ranked 83rd in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-1, 220 pounds, who played quarterback, wide receiver and running back for the
Wildcats. Nicknamed "The Bullet", Givens threw for 337 yds as QB, rushed for 331 yds
as TB, 7.1 yards per carry, caught 13 passes for 255 yds as WR and averaged 25 yards
on kickoffs.
Top Recruit McNair chooses Notre Dame
• Mike McNair, Ranked 84th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-2, 225 pounds, fullback. Mike has set school records with 2,671 rushing yards
while carrying 336 times and scoring 33 TDs. In career, ran 563 times for 4,112 yards
and 55 TDs. He also was a defensive end, but will be a fullback at Notre Dame.
Mahan follows family tradition
• Sean Mahan, 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, Both his father and sister attended Notre Dame.
Call the best offensive linemen in his schools history. Sean was one of the anchors
for the "Legion of Doom" defense that permitted almost no rushing yardage his senior
season and starred on the left side of the offensive line tackle that helped paved
the way for the Jenks High Trojans to rush for more than 3,800 yards in piling up a
school-record 591 points in 14 games.
CNN/SI reports Gerald Morgan Commits to ND
• Gerald Morgan, 6-foot-3, 275 pounds, offensive lineman. Longtime Irish follower.
Could be TE who can grow into OG in South Bend. An all-state selection on both
sides of the ball following his junior year, Black was one of 11 offensive linemen
to earn All-American recognition by the Dallas Morning News. He was also an honorable
mention USA Today All-American.
Black adds SIZE to ND's OL
• Jordan Black, 6-foot-7, 305 pounds, lineman from Christian High School in Dallas will
be playing for Notre Dame. An all-state selection on both sides of the ball following
his junior year, Black was one of 11 offensive linemen to earn All-American recognition
by the Morning News. He was also an honorable mention USA Today All-American. Black is
also ranked 15th in ESPN's Top Offensive Linemen. Black carries a 3.3 grade-point average
and scored a 1020 on the SAT.
Battle goes with Irish
• Arnaz Battle, Ranked 24rd in ESPN's Top 100 players,
a 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, was among the top quarterbacks on Notre Dame's wish list all
season. He threw for 527 yards with five touchdowns and also rushed for 677 yards and
11 scores his senior season. A three-year starter, Battle led Byrd High to records of
8-2, 10-0 and 9-1 with two district championships. Some college coaches project Battle
as a defensive back or wide receiver.
Day's dream soon to come true
• John Day, 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, caught 24 passes for 231 yards and six touchdowns this
season. He might also shift over to defense at Notre Dame, where he tallied 81 tackles
and eight sacks at defensive end. Day was the only DeMatha player to play both ways this
season. McGregor, Day's current football coach, remembers the time he first met Day,
then an eighth-grader. Day indicated his dream was to one day play for Notre Dame.
Howard headed to South Bend
• Terrance Howard, Ranked 78th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-1, 186 pounds, rushed for over 1,400 yards at tailback for Rancocas Valley High
this season. He worked behind a patchwork offensive line that saw four of the team's five
seniors lost to injury. Howard could also be the perfect tonic for the Irish secondary ills.
He saw limited duty on defense.
Roberts ready for Notre Dame
• Ryan Roberts, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, weighed offers from the likes of Iowa, Penn State and
Syracuse before choosing Notre Dame for reasons unrelated to athletics. Irish coaches
indicated to Roberts that he would get his first chance at rush linebacker next season,
with the possibility of jumping to drop linebacker. Roberts made 68 tackles with 20
quarterback sacks this season. He also scored 18 touchdowns as a combination
fullback/tailback, but aims to play strictly defense in college. He can also get the job
done in the classroom. Roberts carries a 3.6 grade point average and scored a 1280 on
the SAT.
David Miller chooses Irish
• David Miller, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, who earned all-state and Tribune all-area honors
last season. He hit 70 of 74 extra points and had nine field goals for a total of 97
points. Miller's longest field goal in his career is 50 yards, which he kicked in a
24-21 regional championship victory against Portage in Penn's 1996 march to the state
title. Miller kicked three field goals in Penn's 16-13 overtime victory against Fort
Wayne Snider in this season's semi-state. Despite slippery conditions, Miller drilled a
37-yard field goal to tie the score in the final minute and booted a 35-yard field goal
in overtime for the winner.
Anthony Weaver commits Dec. 5
• Anthony Weaver, Ranked 92nd in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-4, 240 pounds, defensive end/outside linebacker from Saratoga High School in
Saratoga Springs, N.Y., verbally committed to the Irish late Thursday. Weaver tallied
79 tackles, including 14 for losses, and five quarterback sacks this season. He also
carried 10 times for 717 yards and caught five passes for 52 yards with six total
touchdowns as a combination fullback/tight end. He closed his career with 192 tackles
and 15 sacks as Saratoga won back-to-back league championships and finished sectional
runners-up during Weaver's final two years. Defensive end is expected to be Weaver's
future football focus at Notre Dame. He has room to grow. Weaver just turned 17 and
wears a size 16 shoe.
Hunter to play for the Irish
• Javin Hunter, Ranked 45th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot, 175 pounds, wide receiver chose the Irish over North Carolina. Hunter finished
his senior season with 46 receptions for 794 yards and nine touchdowns. He first set his
sights on the Irish when he visited South Bend last summer for the team's football camp.
There, Hunter developed a solid rapport with Irish recruiting coordinator Bob Chmiel and
wide receivers coach Urban Meyer.
Boiman third verbal for the Irish
• Rocky Boiman, 6-foot-3, 208 pounds, defensive back from St. Xavier H.S. in Cincinnati,
Ohio has verbally committed to Notre Dame. Supposedly one of the top three senior prospects
in Ohio, Boiman runs a 4.5 40 and carries a 3.5 gpa.
Davie secures No. 2
• Ryan Scarola, Ranked 43rd in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-5, 308 pounds, 5.2 in the 40, Ticketed as one of the most sought-after two-way
linemen in the country this upcoming recruiting season, the Murrysville, Pa., native
ignored scholarship offers from Northwestern and Penn State to verbally commit to the
University of Notre Dame for the 1998 season.
Lopienski- ND's first commitment
• Tom Lopienski, Ranked 67th in ESPN's Top 100 players,
6-foot-3, 235 pounds, fullback from Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
selected Notre Dame in mid-March. Lopienski, the son of the former Notre Dame cornerback
by the same name, decided on Notre Dame over the likes of Michigan, Michigan State,
Ohio State and Penn State. With room to grow, Lopienski could develop into a contributor
at several positions -- fullback, linebacker, tight end or interior lineman.
