What do intelligence and active have in common?  Carmen!!  Carmen (ARPH #10492) is a 5 month old red tri female.  Carmen was rescued from an auction.  She was looked over because of the excessive white which was not breed standard.  We are glad, since she would most likely been used as a breeder dog.  And we prefer someone adopts her that is not afraid of this dogs intelligence and athleticism. Carmen is becoming more comfortable with people, but loves to play with other dogs.  Carmen can figure things out quickly - like the doggie door.  She leaps and has no fear launching herself off the top of the couch.  She is a puppy, though and likes to chew things so she needs to be supervised.  We are crate training and housebreaking Carmen.    Carmen is located in the Kansas City/Overland Park area.   Her adoption fee is $200.   If you are interested, please contact pgl@kc.rr.com

Oreo (ARPH #10494) is a just a year old.  His story is a sad one and gives us a glimpse of activities we wish did not exist.  Oreo was one of over 70 dogs being auctioned.  People bid on dogs to be used to build puppy mills, or be used in medical labs.  A rare few may go to someone that wants a dog.  We don’t know what happens to the ones no one wants.  That was Oreo.  As the auction was ending, Oreo and his brother were 2 that were left.  They were not flashy (they are black bi’s) and they were males.  Not as much use as females for breeding in a puppy mill business.  So, there they were.  The person that consigned them to the auction house did not even stick around to see what happened to them.   Luckily, rescue got them.  And what a delight both Oreo and his brother, Flip are!

What Oreo lacks in manners he more than makes up in his desire to be with you!  We’ve been teaching Oreo he can keep 4 feet on the floor, and even though we appreciate his “hugs” he can also get petted while standing.  He’s also getting used to walking on a leash.  He somewhat resembled a slithering worm when we put a leash on him to take him from the auction, but he’s getting a little more use to walking on a leash.  The house also fascinates Oreo.  Things we take for granted, he had never seen before.  But, his curiosity is delightful to watch – especially as he finds balls to play with, tips his head at the sounds of the TV and see’s his reflection in a mirror.  Oreo is being crate trained.  He plays well with other dogs.  Oreo will need a home that will continue to build his self confidence and teach him using positive reinforcement.  He’s a little unsure of men more than women, so a home that has gentle people would be better than one that is more rambunctious.  More than anything Oreo needs a home that will help him forget his past and show him how caring people can be.  In turn, we think you will have a very loyal companion.  Oreo is located in the Kansas City area.  If you are interested in Oreo, please contact pgl@kc.rr.com  Oreo’s brother, Flip, will also be available and posted soon.

Nikki (ARPH  5154) is an 8 year old blue merle female with a tail looking for a new home due to an unfortunate accident.  While sleeping between a table and chairs, she was fallen on by the owners 4 year old grand-daughter.  Nikki had no where to go, was startled, but bit the child.  No stitches were required but it has made the daughter very nervous to now have the grandchildren visit.  Nikki has been around the grandchildren (6 years and 4 years old) all their lives with no other incident.  Never a growl, lip curl or even a sideways glance.   However, the daughter is requesting Nikki find a new home, and the owners are respecting that request.  So, we are helping them in that effort.

Here is what they have said about Nikki:

Nikki is above all a very loving dog.  She wants to be either right next to us or within sight.  She’d rather be in the house where we are than spending any time in the fenced in yard.  She loves riding in the car with us and is an excellent  traveler, sticking her head out a window, and waiting for us in the front seat or taking naps on long trips.  She’s a quiet dog and never barks in the car.  In the house she only barks when someone rings the doorbell but greets all with wagging tail.  We say “someone’s coming” or “someone’s coming to help.”  Somehow she knows this means these are people we welcome into our home.  She greets people but does not jump on them.  She’ll also bark to come back in the house when let out in the backyard.

Nikki is very smart and obedient.  She loves to be patted and will ask for more with a paw.  However, she immediately backs off when told “all done.”  If we think guests have had enough of her right at our feet while we’re all seated, she’ll remove herself when told to “get back.”  Anything we want her to quit doing, we say “all done” and she quits.

When we’re preparing our hors d’oeuvres in the kitchen for guests coming over, Nikki always knows we’re going to have company.  She goes to the door to wait for their arrival.  She knows “want to go for a walk?” and “want to go in the car? “ and “want to go outside?” and “want to go for a walk?”.  She’ll get right to her business when you say “Nikki, potty.”  Other commands she knows and obeys are “sit”; “lie down”; “wait” (she stops and waits); “stay”; “get down” (off  the bed); “go downstairs” (she’ll go first); “come” (inside – not always when running loose outside although she’s never far}; “heel” (she’s good on a leash).

Nikki sleeps in our room and will sleep as long as we do.  When we leave, she always wants to come, too.  But if we say “bye, bye”, she knows that means we’re going without her but will be back.  She immediately runs upstairs to her favorite bed.

Nikki loves to hike.  If several folks are hiking together on a trail and get spread out, her herding instinct kicks in and she’ll run from the front of the group to the back and back and forth.  She has many dog friends she likes to hike with.  However, on encountering a strange dog or dogs, she’ll either sniff and greet or become the Alpha female with growls and barks.   We never know which to expect so unless we know it will just be friends and dogs she knows, we keep her on a leash and distract her with a treat when she’s passing a strange dog.

Nikki loves her walks and hikes but does not need excessive exercise in order to remain calm and settled down at home.  She’s quite laid back.  One walk a day is all she really needs.

Nikki’s very obedient at her visits to a groomer.  We think she likes the attention and that they’re the ones who taught her to catch treats in midair.

She rolls over for her tummy rubs, lies quietly under the table while we’re eating, follows us all over the house or plants herself on the stairway landing so she’ll know which way we’re going next when we’re busy.  Sometimes she watches TV when an animal show is on.   She likes to get under something like a tall bed or behind a chair when there are big thunderstorms.  However, she’s never caused any damage when left alone in the house during a thunderstorm.

The only bad habit she has is eating hors d’oeuvres left unattended at her level on a coffee table.  She does not beg or try to get food off of countertops.  If she’s in the way sniffing around the kitchen, we just say “all done” and she leaves.

Nikki is located in the Kansas City area.  If you are interested in her, please contact pgl@kc.rr.com.  The adoption fee is $200 and you must complete the application which you can find above.

Diamond (ARPH 10493) is a 2 year old black tri.  We shutter to guess how Diamond had to live the first few years of her life.  She was pulled at a dog auction in Southern Missouri.  Her and many other dogs were being auctioned to increase the puppy mill business.  Surely, Diamond was going to be used for breeding.  Luckily, rescue got her.  Diamond shows signs of what she did not have and how she was treated in the short years of her life.  Diamond really wants to trust and bond with someone, but she’s not sure she should…..or can.  You see it in the soulful of her eyes – “Will I be treated badly again?” “Will I be pushed away again?”   While in foster care, Diamond is learning to believe that she will be able to trust people again.  She’s gaining confidence every day.  Diamond is crate trained and is learning to walk on a leash.  Fast movement startles her, but she is not sound sensitive and enjoys exploring the outside world.  She’s starting to interact with toys and it’s amusing to watch her find the joy in playing.   Diamond loves to be petted and will lay with someone forever if they are stroking her beautiful black fur.  Considering Diamond’s past we think she would thrive in a quieter environment with one or two people to really pamper this girl to bring out all her qualities.  When you earn Diamonds trust, you will also earn all her loyalty.    If you think you can give Diamond a better future, please contact pgl@kc.rr.com  Diamond is located  in the Kansas City area.

Hi!  My name is Deuce (ARPH 10487) and I am a six month old, very handsome, active, wiggly red tri Australian shepherd puppy.  I am learning manners from my foster mom and sister and brothers, like how to be a respectful puppy to my elders and how to sit and walk on a leash, and last but not least, not potty in the house.  I am full of energy and love to play a nice long game of fetch or Frisbee!  I love sleeping in my crate at night and enjoy my bones and peanut butter filled Kong during the day.  I am neutered and up to date on all of my shots and ready to find a forever home.  I am going through a nippy puppy stage and I have exhibited strong herding behavior, so I am looking for a home with no small children.  I am a bit pushy so I would be best in a home that understands proper leadership so that I turn into a great dog when I grow up!  I will be a big boy, just look at the size of my feet!   I am being fostered in the Manhattan/Topeka area.  The adoption fee is $200 and you must fill out an adoption application if you are interested in meeting me.
