Still 2 CONC , his father was a Johannsmeyer and also owned the Johannsmeyer farm in Rattinghausen, so Cla 2 CONC mor retained the last name of his father. 2 CONT 2 CONT When 20 years old, Clamor enlisted in the 6th Hanoverian Regiment (Prussian Guard). In the s 2 CONC pring of 1865 after 3 years of service, Clamor hired a mercenery to finish his service, payin 2 CONC g $110, and left for the United States. He arrived in the United State on 31 July 1865 at 2 2 CONC 4 years of age. After working as a grocery clerk in New York City for two months, he made th 2 CONC e overland trip to Kansas City, and then, traveled by boat to Leavenworth. He then travele 2 CONC d overland to Randolph and Swede Creek, 23 miles north of Manhattan, Kansas. He then sent fo 2 CONC r his fiance, who he married soon after arrival in Randolph in late 1865. Their first home w 2 CONC as a log cabin on their farm 2 1/2 miles north of the old Randolph (moved with the creation o 2 CONC f Tuttle Creek Reservoir). 2 CONT 2 CONT Clamor learned of opportunity in the Swede Creek area of Riley County from his future mother- 2 CONC in-law, Maria Elenora (Meisemeyer) Baune. Her sister, Anna Marie Elizabeth Meisemeyer, live 2 CONC d in Riley County, Kansas and was married to Charles Meyer. Charles died from drowning in th 2 CONC e Blue River, and the widow remarried Fred Toburen. Erna Bisig, a grandaughter, wrote a lett 2 CONC er while doing research on the family that says Anna Marie Elizabeth Meisemeyer went to Illin 2 CONC ois with her bachelor brother, apparently from Germany. Somehow, she met and married Charle 2 CONC s, and they ended up in Kansas Territory on the Blue River. 2 CONT 2 CONT No doubt, after the marriage to Fred Toburen, Maria Elenora Baune arranged through her siste 2 CONC r to have Fred Toburen accommodate Clamor's, and then, their move to Kansas. Maria Elenora ( 2 CONC Meisemeyer) Baune's younger sister, Anna Marie Engel Meisemeyer, evidently came to the Unite 2 CONC d States at the same time and subsequently married Fred's younger brother, Herman Heinrich To 2 CONC buren. Maria Elenora (Meisemeyer) Baune's younger brother Fred and the rest of the brother 2 CONC s and sisters also apparently joined them in the Swede Creek area given the census informatio 2 CONC n in 1880. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clamor Adolph was a very successful farmer. When he moved to Kansas he purchased 160 acres o 2 CONC f bottom land on the Big Blue River. The 1870 census showed the value of his real estate a 2 CONC t $3,000 and his personal estate as $2,140. When he died he owned 340 acres. He had held va 2 CONC rious township offices, and on the 5th of Novermber 1889 was elected Commissioner on the Inde 2 CONC pendent ticket. His life is discussed in "Portrait and Geographical Album" of Washington, Cl 2 CONC ay, Riley Counties, Kansas," prepared by Chapman Brothers Publishers, Chicago, IL, 1890, an 2 CONC d "Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie." There is also a family published manuscript "Clamor Ad 2 CONC olph Johansmeyer, Wehrendorf Prussia and his descendant families in America," dated July 1986 2 CONC . Ivan Harrisberger conceived the idea for the Johnsmeyer story, researched and wrote the ma 2 CONC jority of the initial document. Forest Harrisberger prepared the manuscripts for publicatio 2 CONC n and distribution. Various family members have a copy of this manuscript. 2 CONT 2 CONT Other information from the Johnsmeyer history follows - quoting son Herman Johnsmeyer regardi 2 CONC ng the decision of Clamor Adolph to go to America and the subsequent events. "My father, Clam 2 CONC or Adolph Johnsmeyer, was the son of a rather well-to-do land owner called a Baron which mean 2 CONC t that he was sufficiently wealthy to have peasant farmers on his land. Peasant farmers wer 2 CONC e people who had a small house, a parcel of land large enough to make a meager living, and we 2 CONC re subject to call at any time to work for the land owner, and this included women. My mothe 2 CONC r's folks were one of the peasant families who lived on my father's folks' land. They were q 2 CONC uite a distinguished family and were known as von Johannsmeyer's. My mother was the only chi 2 CONC ld and was considered very pretty. Her weight was only about 100 pounds, and was what one wo 2 CONC uld call a 'pretty and sweet young thing.' As things will happen, Dad fell in love with thi 2 CONC s pretty little peasant girl. 2 CONT 2 CONT "His main concern was economics since he could not inherit the family estate as provided by t 2 CONC he German law; and now that he had gotten 'involved' with the pretty little peasant girl, run 2 CONC ning away seemed to be the perfect solution. 2 CONT 2 CONT "So, arrangement were made between the two lovers for father to go ahead and get established 2 CONC , find a place for his bride-to-be, and as soon as his ambition was realized, he would send h 2 CONC er the money to come to him. We can readily see that this took very much courage. My father 2 CONC 's age at that time was in the early 20's, and mother was only 17. But they, like a lot of o 2 CONC thers, had the true pioneer spirit. He started for Amerca in mid-1865, leaving from Bremen 2 CONC , Germany, by sail boat and arriving in New York about two weeks later. From theire he wen 2 CONC t by rail to Manhattan, Kansas, and took up a homestead about 23 miles north of Manhattan o 2 CONC n the Big Blue River. Then, he bought a tract adjoing the homestead from Bill Meyer, which h 2 CONC ad a small one-room log house on it; after which, he sent for his bride-to-be. 2 CONT 2 CONT "My mother left her country with her parents to join her husband-to-be in Riley County, Kansa 2 CONC s. They had a relative by the name of Fred Toburen (his wife was Elenora Boehne's sister) wh 2 CONC o lived not too far from my father's homestead which was their destination. They set sail fo 2 CONC r their new home in a sailboat which must not have been of the best kind. She was on the boa 2 CONC t nine weeks drifting in the rough sea. They had just about given up hope of getting acros 2 CONC s the ocean. They started rationing food and water and things looked very gloomy, but they fi 2 CONC nally reached land, and subsequently, Leavenworth, Kansas by train. They arrived there witho 2 CONC ut any trouble and took rooms in a boarding house. Then there was trouble getting word to Mr 2 CONC . Toburen that they had arrived. The only way was by mail and that was so very slow. They wa 2 CONC ited for quite some time before Mr. Toburen got the word, but when he did he rigged up his ol 2 CONC d wagon, pulled by an ox team, and went after my mother in Leavenworth. Mr. Toburen had bee 2 CONC n in this country a few years and was somewhat established in his home in Swede Creek. Thes 2 CONC e old settlers had to locate on the creek or river so that they would have water and wood; al 2 CONC so, lumber with which to build their homes. 2 CONT 2 CONT "In due time, father and mother set up housekeeping in their little log cabin to face the fut 2 CONC ure. The nearest trading post was at Junction City, about 45 miles away and there was no est 2 CONC ablished road, just prairie tracks across the country. Indians were quite common, but not vi 2 CONC cious. If not molested, they were mostly friendly, there was drouth and scarcity of food. Th 2 CONC ey had some cultivated ground. It was plowed, leveled down, marked with a wooden marker 3 fe 2 CONC et apart both ways, then planted with a sharp stick punching a hole in the ground and droppin 2 CONC g in the kernel. Then, the growing corn was cultivated with a one horse shovel plow both way 2 CONC s. In the fall, the corn was shocked out, thrown in piles, and hauled out with wagons. Smal 2 CONC l grains - as wheat and oats - were handled much the same. 2 CONT 2 CONT "Building material was plentiful along the river but all work had to be done by hand. A fire 2 CONC place provided heat, cooking fire, and light until candles could be made. Log and stone fenc 2 CONC es were built after the housing needs were provided. Wells were sunk - the hole being dug b 2 CONC y hand, walls lined with stone. The women did hand laundering, gardened, sewed for the famil 2 CONC y, often spinning the thread and weaving the cloth. They made lye, needed for soap making, fr 2 CONC om wood ashes. 2 CONT 2 CONT "As the family grew, they needed a new house, so in 1879, a large eight-room frame house wa 2 CONC s erected. Then, other buildings of stone and mortar were built. The mortar was burned in p 2 CONC its in the hillside. Many miles of stone fences were laid by the Swedes who were early settl 2 CONC ers, and were stone masons by trade. The little town of Randolph was started at about the sa 2 CONC me time the new house was built, and a grade school was built in 1868. The older children we 2 CONC nt to this school which was two and one-half miles from our house. 2 CONT 2 CONT "In 1886, the Union Pacific Railroad was built through our farm and was done with mule teams 2 CONC . About a dozen teams were used at one time for grading. The father-in-law, C. A. Boehne, w 2 CONC ho by trade was a carpenter, and who made wooden shoes and wove baskets, helped with the buid 2 CONC ing projects. He also wove a casket for a worker who died on the railroad project. Soon a l 2 CONC ittle country school was built down the road from our house with the help of the railroad, an 2 CONC d the younger children received their education there. 2 CONT 2 CONT "The nearest church, Swede Creek Church, was six miles away over rough ravine roads, but we a 2 CONC ttended quite regularly uising a lumber wagon for transportation. Later, a spring wagon wa 2 CONC s used, and still later a carriage with top for curtains to help weather the cold north wind 2 CONC . When weather would not permit us to attend church, father would gather us into the large d 2 CONC ining room and read to us from a large book of sermons he had brought with him from Germany 2 CONC . They also attended the 5-day camp meeting held on the camp ground 2 miles from the church 2 CONC . Clamor helped build the church and served as a trustee. 2 CONT 2 CONT "Father passed away in 1911 at the age of 70. At that time Carl, the youngest boy, and two o 2 CONC f his sisters, Nellie and Alma, were at home and carried on the work. Mother owned the plac 2 CONC e until 1929 when August and Nellie Richter, who were renting then, bought the farm consistin 2 CONC g of about 350 acres for $20,000. Mother lived on the farm with them all of her remaining da 2 CONC ys, and passed away in 1940 at the age of 92." 2 CONT 2 CONT (Excerpts from Chaplman Bros. Publishers): "C. A. Johnsmeyer. There is probably not within t 2 CONC he limits of Jackson Township, Riley County, a more reliable liberal-minded, or public-spirit 2 CONC ed, German citizen than he with whom we introduce this sketch. He has been very successful f 2 CONC inancially, his property totalled over 400 acres. He has held the various township offices 2 CONC , and on the 5th of November, 1889, was elected Commissioner on the Independent ticket 2 CONC . . . . Our subject has been quite prominent in his community, serving as School Director an 2 CONC d Road Supervisor, besides being Township Treasurer for six years. He is a member in good st 2 CONC anding of the German Lutheran church, in which he served as Trustee, and assisted in buildin 2 CONC g of the church edifice at Swede Creek." 2 CONT 2 CONT Clamor Johannsmeyer filed for a homestead as soon as he arrived in the United States in 1865 2 CONC . He then purchased additional land from Eric Linquist. His land included Tract No. F621 2 CONC . It contained about 190 acres including easement, lying below elevation 1140 (M. S. L.). T 2 CONC he acreage not sold to the government for Tuttle Creek Reservoir was about one-quarter sectio 2 CONC n of land. He also purchased 227 acres at Rose Hill which he sold to son Louis for $3000. A 2 CONC ccording to Erna, "There was an old stone house on it, lots of rats, and many problems. Uncl 2 CONC e John came, and he and Dad batch there until a new house was built by Gus. Ostaff, Wm Busche 2 CONC r, and John Toburen. Acreage supposedly included 160 acres on Sec b, 160 acres on Sec 31, 32 2 CONC 0 acres on Sec 30, and 80 acres in Sec 25, all in Riley County, and 160 acres near Parallel i 2 CONC n Washington, County. 2 CONT 2 CONT According to Erna Bisig, "I don't think Grandma appreciated his being away so much, but the k 2 CONC ids were glad when he was gone - had more fun. He was very strict and really worked, especia 2 CONC lly the older ones." 2 CONT 2 CONT Clamor facilitated the moves of his brother, Henrich Wilhelm Johannsmeyer (in 1870), and hi 2 CONC s half brother, Heinrich Ludwig Kaump (in 1871), to the United Stated to settle in the area 2 CONC . Bruce Kaump, the great grandson of both Heinrich Ludwig Kaump and Clamor Adolph Johannsmey 2 CONC er, still farms and raises cattle on the Kaump homestead property today. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clamor died of prostate problems and grip. He is buried in Swede Creek Cemetery, surrounde 2 CONC d by Kaump's, Meisemeyer's, the Baune's (Boehne's), and the other families into which his fam 2 CONC ily married - Toburen, Richter, Oberhelmann, Meyer, and others. She was the only child and ve 2 CONC ry small, only about 100 pounds. 2 CONT 2 CONT One evening, the peasant families were having a kind of party - a "Husking Bee." The one get 2 CONC ting the "red ear" of corn would be kissed. It was Anna Marie Baune that got it, and "out o 2 CONC f the blue" came Clarmor Adolph Johannsmeyer on his horse and kissed her. Later, he came t 2 CONC o their home to see her. Her father didn't like this, and told his daugter so. He said Joha 2 CONC nnsmeyer's were not of their class, and warned her not to see Clamor Adolph again. That didn 2 CONC 't stop them. One time, Clarmor Adolph Johannsmeyer was with her in their small peasant hous 2 CONC e when her family was not home. Her father came home, so young Johannsmeyer hurriedly got ou 2 CONC t of the house, and made his way through the horses and other farm animals until he got away. 2 CONT 2 CONT Anna Marie left Germany with her parents after Clamor Adolph Johannsmeyer had established a f 2 CONC arm 23 miles north of Manhattan, Kansas (2 1/2 miles north of old Randolph) on the Big Blu 2 CONC e River (now flooded by Tuttle Creek Reservoir). They made their way here thanks to the supp 2 CONC ort of the Meisemeyer's and Fred Toburen. Fred was the brother-in-law of Clamor Adolph Baune 2 CONC 's wife, Marie Elenore Meisemeyer, and lived nearby. Marie Elenore's sister, Anna Maria Eliz 2 CONC abeth Meisemeyer who was married to Fred, was originally married to Charles Meyer. When Char 2 CONC les drowned in the Blue River, Anna Maria Elizabeth Meisemeyer had sufficient funds to begi 2 CONC n sending for other family members in Prussia, which included the Baune's and their daughter 2 CONC , who was to be wed to Clamor Adolph Johannsmeyer. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1879, the family built an eight-room frame house. Her son, Carl Frederick and Carl's son 2 CONC , Harry Elmer, were born in this house. The Swede Creek Church they attended was six miles a 2 CONC way over rough ravine roads. They used a lumber wagon for transportation. Later a spring wa 2 CONC gon was used, and still later a carriage with top for curtains to help weather the cold nort 2 CONC h wind. When weather would not permit the family to attend church, Clamor Adolph would gathe 2 CONC r up the family in the large dining room and read from a large book of sermons he had brough 2 CONC t with him from Prussia. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1895, they purchased the Parallel store. The next year a cylclone hit it and did a lot o 2 CONC f damage. The purchase was said to be unfortunate by the family due to so many moves, the de 2 CONC structive cyclone, search for grandmother (see below), Aunt Emma (Meisemeyer) Johnsmeyer's pr 2 CONC emature death, Amanda given so much responsibility at 17, and John being stuck there from 189 2 CONC 5-1902. I don't think she ever told any of them where she had hidden. It was a really dirt 2 CONC y trick, all felt especially sorry for little Nellie." 2 CONT 2 CONT The family knew many hardships - Indian perils, drouth, and scarcity of food. Anna often rec 2 CONC alled the grasshopper invasion of 1874. According to Erna Bisig, "Grandma said she was lef 2 CONC t alone so much, had to trade with the Indians, feed the trampsk besides cook, bake, spin, an 2 CONC d sew for her many children, and she wasn't too well. She loved her children, but I think sh 2 CONC e felt inferior to her huband. She was happy to have her folks to help her." Supposedly, the purchase price for the cabi 2 CONC n and land was fairly expensive at $1,000. 2 CONT 2 CONT From Johnsmeyer Family History: Henry Johnsmeyer married Mary Harrisberger of Winkler, Kansa 2 CONC s on November 25, 1890 in a double wedding ceremony when his sister Louisa Johnsmeyer was mar 2 CONC ried to Mary's brother Albert Harrisberger. Immediately after their marriage, Henry and Mar 2 CONC y located on a small farm near Parallel, Washington County, Kansas, a place which they soon p 2 CONC urchased. Although this was a reasonably good red-soiled farm on high ground, it compared ra 2 CONC ther unfavorably with farms in the lower areas which had a more productive soil. So, when th 2 CONC e oppportunity presented itself for them to obtain a better location, they purchased a large 2 CONC r and better improved farm in the Grandview vicinity along Mill Creek, several miles east o 2 CONC f the town of Riley, Kansas. Soon after that, they added a quarter section of pasture land t 2 CONC o their original acquisition, which enabled them to add cattle farming to their other operati 2 CONC ons. 2 CONT 2 CONT Henry was a very capable businessman - cool, calculating, and practical. He also was a ver 2 CONC y knowledgable farmer, and by the time he was fifty years of age, he had bought and paid fo 2 CONC r three farms. After moving to his third farm near the town of Riley, Kansas, he purchase 2 CONC d a controlling interest in the Riley State Bank for investment purposes. Following this acq 2 CONC uisition, he built a new house in the town of Riley, not far from where his bank was locate 2 CONC d and rented his farm to his son-in-law and daughter, Lee and Nora Goode. Farming, however, did not have the appeal to match that of the lumber business. So in F 2 CONC ebruary 1903, L. W. moved back to Cleburne where he established the operation of the lumber a 2 CONC nd implement business under various arrangements for about five years. It was during this pe 2 CONC riod when their son Raymond was born. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the fall of 1907, a little 8 year old girl, neglected by her father, came to live with the 2 CONC m, to go to school, and to help Emma with household chores. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1909, L. W. again got the farm fever and bought the Paddleford farm on Mill Creek in the G 2 CONC randview area, but after only a short period of ownership was forced to give up farming due t 2 CONC o a severe accident - a hay fork dropped on him. Fortunately, he was offered the opportunit 2 CONC y at that time to move to Randolph, Kansas, to manage the Farmer's Co-op lumber yard durin 2 CONC g the World War I period. It also was during this period that he acquired the John F. Beckma 2 CONC n store which he owned and operated until 1921, when he sold it and moved his family to Manha 2 CONC ttan, Kansas. But before leaving Randolph, L. W. bought a farm two and one-half miles east o 2 CONC f Leonardville, Kansas, entirely for investment purposes. He rented it to Carl Toburen, Emma 2 CONC 's nephew until 1964. LW continued the ownership of this place on a rental basis until his a 2 CONC nd his wife's passing, when it became the property of their children. 2 CONT 2 CONT LW had hay fever very bad every fall and almost every fall had to go to Colorada Springs to b 2 CONC reathe. However, in the late 1920's, he had entered into a part 2 CONC nership in the feed and seed business, operating his share of the business with hired help 2 CONC . This proved to be impractical and unprofitable because of unsatisfactory performance; so i 2 CONC n 1929, he turned over the management of the bakery to his children, dissolved his partnershi 2 CONC p, and returned to the feed store business full time. At about this same time he gave his ch 2 CONC ildren part interest in the feed business, as he had done previously with the bakery. At a l 2 CONC ater date, Erna became sole owner of the bakery, and Raymond sole owner of the feed business. 2 CONT 2 CONT Louis retired from active business in 1942, but never lost interest in his farm near Leonardv 2 CONC ille. 2 CONT 2 CONT On February 26, 1955, he suffered a stroke and was hospitalized for five months. Some of her stories follow: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The Swede Creek community followed the German custom of holding camp meetings once a year 2 CONC . The first once was held on the Fred Toburen farm. People brought their food and tents an 2 CONC d enjoyed religious meetings for from one to seven days. The camp meetings were held unde 2 CONC r a large tent in the Toburen Grove until a Tabernacle was built in 1914. 2 CONT 2 CONT "The education of the children was also planned early. Soon after the original Swede Creek C 2 CONC hurch was built in 1867, a log cabin school house was erected. The children had been taugh 2 CONC t in one room of the Fred Toburen home until the new building was ready in 1870. A 3-month s 2 CONC chool term began June 28th that year, but the next year, the term began Aug 5th. In 1882 2 CONC , a stone school house was built. 2 CONT 2 CONT "In these early days, families lived in tents, dugouts, or covered wagons until crude log cab 2 CONC ins were built. Building material was plentiful along the river, but all work had to be don 2 CONC e by hand. A fireplace provided hear, cooking fire, and light, until candles could be made 2 CONC . Buffaloes provided meat for the family and tallow for the candles. Log and stone fences w 2 CONC ere built after housing needs were provided. The first successful enterprise was cattle rais 2 CONC ing and the first agricultural crop was corn. Home laundering was done by hand in streams un 2 CONC til wells were sunk. The well hole was dug by hand and rock lined the walls. 2 CONT 2 CONT "The women gardened, sewed for the family, often spinning the thread, and weaving the cloth 2 CONC . They made the lye, needed in soap making, from wood ashes. Social life was rich in commun 2 CONC ity spirit. Besides church activities, there were auilting parties, river skating, and hors 2 CONC e back riding. A branch of the Union Pacific railroad was built in 1884." 1 CHAN 2 DATE 6 Apr 2003 3 TIME 00:00:00 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer Photos\ErnaJohnsmeyer.jpg 2 TITL Erna Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM Y 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer Photos\ErnaJohnsmeyer1902.jpg 2 TITL Erna Johnsmeyer Baby Picture 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer Photos\Erna&RaymondJohnsmeyer.jpg 2 TITL Erna and Raymond Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE Raymond is 6 weeks old in this photo. 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer History\Erna's Family History p1.jpg 2 TITL Erna Bisig's Family History Letter to Harry Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE Johnsmeyer and Toburen history in Kansas 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer History\Erna's Family History p2.jpg 2 TITL Page 2 of Erna's Letter to Harry Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer History\Erna's Family History p3.jpg 2 TITL Page 3 of Erna's Letter to Harry Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE Johnsmeyer History\Erna's Family History p4.jpg 2 TITL Page 4 of Erna's Letter to Harry Johnsmeyer 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 0 @I179@ INDI 1 NAME Raymond Leland /Johnsmeyer/ 2 SURN Johnsmeyer 2 GIVN Raymond Leland 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 May 1908 2 PLAC Cleburne, Kansas 1 DEAT 2 DATE 16 Jul 1995 2 PLAC Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas 1 BURI 2 DATE 18 Jul 1995 2 PLAC Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas 1 _UID 3A74204CA253D5118E93E40C94D83749F2B4 1 FAMS @F109@ 1 FAMC @F53@ 1 NOTE Died at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan, Kansas.
