Our High Tech Ancestors (HTA), from Space Colonized Earth recently. Life did not Evolve for millions of years. Our Science today knows the steps to Colonize a Planet, and they are the same as in Genesis 1. There is so much written in the past and today, that when we can understand the Colonization of Earth, the 'Fall' of Man from High Tech Birth to Heterosexual Body Birth, and the Planetary Noah/Atlantis Flood, it should be possible to understand the Planetary Fire Judgement that is the next catastrophe for Earth. The 'Fallen' Man Society will destroy the Balanced Elements started on Earth by our HTA, with their Pollution and Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction. This Fallen Lifestyle has happened on Fallen Planets before Earth, so it is easy to prophecy the cycles until the last Catastrophe, with the help of God/HTA. The age of our Universe, Galaxy, or Solar System is not known by Man, but the Colonization of Earth was recent, not millions or billions of years ago. Life on Earth is not as old as our Solar System. The Species Man has Free Will, so our HTA will not force us to live the Asexual Everlasting Physical Kingdom of God/Life.
We are about to reach the Time for a Choice, called the Judgement Day. The Heterosexual Body Birth Man has to go through the cycles of Fallen Man on a Planet until they understand what they are doing to Eternal Physical Life, or until the Planet Elements are so Unbalanced, that they can not support Life anymore. If the Human Species Evolved somewhere in Space, and then started Colonizing other Planets, may be known in the future, but Life on Earth was Colonized by our HTA that looked like Man and flew in fiery chariots, now called UFOs and spaceships. Asexual Birth Man is the Caretaker Species; Heterosexual Birth Man is the Killer Species. Christ is Balanced Elements and Life. Antichrist is Unbalanced Elements and Death. Whom should we Serve?
"In Search of Ancient Gods" By Erich von Daniken. "In conversation with the 'most High' Ezra expatiates on the unrighteousness of this world. As in other holy scriptures, the 'most High' promises that one day he will return from the heavens to take the 'righteous and wise' with him. Return from where? The 'righteous and wise' with him whither? To which planet? We can assume that the home planet of the extraterrestrial spacemen was some light years away from our solar system, because the Commanding Officer (the 'most High') gives Ezra hints about time dilation on interstellar flights at great velocities. Ezra is puzzled; he does not understand (naturally!) and asks the 'most High' if he could not have created all the generations of the past, present and future at one time so that they could all take part in the 'journey home'. - Ezra reflects on these temporal consequences; he wants to know whether the dead or the living will be happier when the return to the heavens takes place. The 'most High' assures him laconically: 'The living are far happier than the dead'. This lapidary answer is understandable. The Commanding Officer has already told the prophet that the earth is old and 'past the powers of its youth'. According to the laws of time dilation on interstellar flights at high velocities, there is no mystery concealed in the answer, in my view.
"If the 'most High' returns after some thousands of years have passed, our planet may have become uninhabitable owing to environmental pollution and industrial overexpansion. Those still alive are inhaling the last remnants of oxygen with a death rattle in their throats. It is not surprising that the living whom the 'most High' wants to deport to another planet are by far the 'happier'. The 'most High' tells Ezra that it was he who spoke to Moses and give him instructions. - Time dilation was only 'discovered' in our day, but it is a 'law' and has always been valid. So it also applied to the 'gods', who knew all about it. If a spaceship is steadily propelled at one G and braked half way along its course with minus 1G, the following time dilations would take place for the rocket crew and the inhabitants left behind on the earth:

"These tables from Meyer's 'Handbook on Space' show that the enormous shifts in time between rocket crew and launching planet have more effect on long journeys. Only 40 brief years pass for the crew of a spaceship propelled at one G, whereas 36,000 years creep by on earth. Once we know this, we can understand why the 'gods' seemed immortal in comparison with men. Is it not possible, according to this law, that the Old Testament prophets, Elijah, Moses and Ezra, whom the goods took with them in a spaceship for their services on earth, are still alive today? Light from Jupiter takes 35 minutes when nearest Earth, nearly an hour when fartherest apart. Moving at nearly the velocity of light - a starship could sail all the way to the Andromeda galaxy in less then thirty years of on-board time. But they could never return. By the time they landed in Andromeda, two million years would have expired back home. - Part Two. "The Universe Within" "All that we can ever comprehend of the Universe must reside within our minds. - The amazing thing is not that mental models of nature are flawed or diminutive, but that they work at all. The equations of Kepler, Newton, and Einstein really do account for the trajectories of the Moon and the Andromeda galaxy. Nobody knows why this should be so. - Part Three. "Living cells, after all, are equipped with simple nanomachines (proteins) controlled by computer-like molecules (DNA). In an embryo they build from the bottom up, starting with a single cell that replicates and differentiates until the result is a mushroom, as dolphin or a human being. Our grandchildren may employ similar technology to grow computers, surgical implements, apartment buildings, and spaceships. - In the words of its originator - James E. Lovelock, the Gaia hypothesis (Greek goddess of Earth) maintains "that the entire range of living matter on Earth, from whales to viruses, can be regarded as a single entity, capable of manipulating its environment to suit its needs". This is certainly a provocative idea, one that among many other things suggests that any species that insults the biosphere - us, for instance - may expect to be rejected by it, or to be damped down in something like the way that an oyster isolates an intruding speck of sand by enbombing it in a pearl. But Gaia also leads to talk of "managing" the planet, and if we are to do that we shall have to learn a great many hard lessons, and swiftly. - "Greenhouse Effect" - Atomospheric levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have been increasing throughout the industrial age. CO/2 levels have risen about 25% since 1850, and continue to increase. The industrialized nations pump seven billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air annually; each automobile dumps its weight in carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.

"Astronomers confirm key Einstein prediction" Two teams of astronomers said Thursday that they have confirmed a key prediction of Einstein's theory of relativity by showing that the very fabric of space-time is twisted and distorted by the presence of a massive rotating object such as a black hole. If confirmed further, the discovery would be "a major milestone in astronomy", said astronomer Stephen Maran, a spokesman for the American Astronomical Society. The teams, which observed the effect in different ways, presented their findings at an astrophysics meeting in Estes Park, Colo. Both groups used observations made with a satellite called the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, named for Massachusetts Institute of Technology astronomer Bruno Rossi, a pioneer of X-ray astronomy. The astronomers found a phenomenon called "frame dragging", meaning that the framework of space-time is pulled into a distorted shape by the presence of a rotating object. Earth should have the same effect on its immediate surroundings, but the effect would be so small that it has been impossible to detect, astronomers said.
"But massive objects, such as neutron stars or black holes - both the collapsed remnants of long-dead stars - produce a much more intense distortion that is easier to detect. Wei Cui of MIT and his team used the satellite, which was launched in December 1995, to measure the effect around black holes. Another team, headed by Luigi Stella of the Astronomical Observatory of Rome, studied the effect on neutron stars. Both teams say they found apparent confirmation of the effect. Stella said that after observing the rotation of 15 neutron stars, the teams found three that showed variations in the speed of rotation that matched those predicted by Einstein's theory. "We were very excited to see that three of these neutron stars display" the kinds of variations expected, with a recurrence "that is well within the predicted range", Stella said. The team led by Cui, of MIT's Center for Space Research, found the same effect with black holes."
"The Catholic KEY, 12/21/19'75'. "A Scientist Looks At The Creation Of The Earth" By James Burkhart. "Genesis I is much, much more than a scientific treatise. It is designed to show the relationship between Yahweh and His people: God's generosity, power, and the abundance of His gifts. No doubt, the story grew in the telling, became tradition and eventually was written in the familiar format by an inspired author. Let us imagine for a moment that Genesis I had been written by a modern (uninspired) student of the sciences. Excluding the beauty and poetry (which this Author could never hope to duplicate), how would a more modern history of creation compare with the Biblical account? What follows is such a history. It is a history of the 10-billion-year event which we call our universe. It is highly speculative in some areas, but is generally acceptable science. It is left to you to make any "scientific" comparisons between the two stories.
"DAY 1: Year 0 - Hour 0 - Minute 0 Whether ours is the first universe ever created, or if it is only one universe of a continuing cycle of oscillations between new and dying universes from times before, time begins for this sequence at this moment. There is light. The mass-energy of all of creation is contained for an incredibly short fraction of a second within a primordial fine ball about the diameter of our present-day solar system. Matter, which is that compact, must expand. The fine ball "explodes". Protons, neutrons, and electrons are formed from the intense energy and from more elementary particles. The density of material encourages some protons (hydrogen nuclei) to combine. Helium nuclei are thus made.
"Year 0 Hour 0 - Minute 30 Day one continues, but the nuclei building stops. The universe is now all hydrogen nuclei and helium nuclei. These continue their rapid expansion caused by the initial explosion. All matter is rushing sway from a common center, cooling rapidly.
"TIME: Year - 100,000 The temperature of the fine ball has decreased to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature, electrons can orbit the hydrogen and helium nuclei composed earlier. Thus, the first atoms come into existence. Even though all of these atoms are still moving away from the original fireball location, momentary swirls and eddies from concentrations of this gas. These concentrations increase in mass and size because of the mutual gravitational attraction of the individual atoms. Billions of such "packets" of gas form.
"TIME: Year - 100 million The large concentrations of gas slowly condense. They become clearly defined structures. These "protogalaxies" condense even further, taking on individual shapes depending on their rotation. Becoming darker and denser, the gas is squeezed and compressed into millions of "small" protostars in the center or hub of the cloud. Although the initial stages of condensation have taken millions of years, the final stages, the actual creation of the individual stars from protostars, occurs very rapidly. The heat given off by the gravitationally induced compression cannot escape from the center of each protostar, occurs very rapidly. (This is the process which is responsible for the light and heat of our own sun). A star is born. Billions of stars are born in each of the billions of galaxies. For the second time, there is light.
"DAY 2: Year - 2 billion Some of the more massive stars have used up their supply of hydrogen fuel in their cores. These stars, located at the center of the galaxies, are entering the last stages of life. The helium byproducts of their fusion processes begin to "burn" in turn, creating more and heavier elements. The stars begin to explode under their own tremendous internal pressures. In the last few seconds of the stars' lives, protons and neutrons combine to form all of the natural 95 elements. The stars burst, scattering these precious elements back into space where they mix with the still uncombined primordial hydrogen and helium. These elements will later form new stars, planets and will become the atoms of every man and woman alive today. We are truly made from the dust of stars.
"Day 3: Year - 5.4 billion Second generation stars are being formed from this new gas-dust mixture nearer the edge of the galaxies. The condensation process repeats itself (as earlier) but these new stars are much more interesting. Because, simultaneously with the star formation, part of the gas is condensing into orbiting planets and moons which are composed of all the elements. One of these planets, the earth, condenses with the heavier elements forming the core. This earth is enveloped by a huge gas cloud which obscures the surface. The sun (which is, after all, just another star) begins to "burn". The excess dark gas is expelled by the pressure of the fiery sun, exposing a new planet to the already old galaxy. For the first time, starlight falls on the earth. The chemicals formed in the cataclysmic star explosions and afterwards, in the billions of years of mixing in space, are subjected to the new environmental pressures of the fledging earth. Water vapor and other gases are forced from the still molten crust. A sea is formed, a sea which will soon become the "stirring pot" for more complicated molecules, including amino acids, the basic units of life. The hydrogen atmosphere is replaced by a protective oxygen ozone layer.
"DAY 4: Year - 9 billion Life begins in the sea, the ideal mother because it contains the ingredients and the medium for growth. Life extends itself to the land, greenery fills the fertile areas of the earth. Animals, birds and mankind will be along in a short billion years. The garden is ready."
K.C. STAR, 1990-93. "'Big Bang' theory of creation appears far from complete" by Billy Graham. "Q. How do you think the world began? Does the "big bang" theory I have read about fit the Bible's account better than the other scientific theories? I am fascinated by some of the articles I read about the origin of the universe and wonder what the Bible has to say."

I have talked with some scientists who contend that this theory - which suggests the universe began in a massive, instantaneous explosion and has been expanding ever since - is compatible with what the Bible teaches about the formation of the universe. However, we must be very cautious about accepting any scientific theory as final or saying it completely explains some point in the Bible, for no theory is complete and new theories come along almost every day. The theory to which you refer, for example, does not really explain the creation of the universe, because it doesn't answer the question of where all the elements that make up the universe came from in the first place. The Bible's account of the beginning of the world is told very simply, and yet it is incredibly profound: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God saw all that he had made and it was very good: (Genesis 1:1,31). Yes, everything in the universe was created out of nothing by God's decree. But God created this world for a purpose, and he created us also. We are not here by chance. God created us because he loves us, and he wants us to know him personally and to serve him."
Where did all the elements that make up the universes come from in the first place, before the Big Bang? Religion says God; Science says ? There are two different descriptions about God in religion: The 'One God' and the 'Triune God of three 'persons' in One'. The One True God of the Hydrogen Atom, the Source Of Life (SOL) is the 'One God' of religion, that no one has ever seen. We may never know where the Atoms come from, but this SOL made all the Atom Universes, of which we are a tiny part. We are all One in the Atom. The Triune God teachings are the Man Gods, Lord, Jehovah, and Angels, that supernaturally created Earth 'in the beginning', who are our HTA, whom many saw and talked to in Scripture; we 'are' in their image. Our HTA are Perfect Physical Human Beings, of the High Tech Higher 'Nature' of reproduction, who have a High Tech Balanced Planet and Colonize other Home Planets; they are not Spirit Beings. The creation in Genesis is about the Colonization of Earth, not about the Creation of our Universe, or the Universes. We also use two different ideas of the word Universe. There are many Universes in the cosmos, created by the SOL, which Master Universe probably had it's big bang. If each local Universe has their own big bang, and collapses into a Black Hole, they may not always do it at the same time, so the Master Universe goes on and on. Physical Man has to keep their Balanced High Tech so they can escape their collapsing Solar System, Galaxy or local Universe, and not be caught in their Black Hole.
The heavens in Genesis, are the three different atmospheres around the Planet that was started on Day 1 with blue-green algae. Then the waters were separated, and when our HTA saw that the elements were setting up for our type of Life, they added the rest of the species. Each Day was 1000 years. This is the process our scientists say they would use to colonized another Planet similar to the soupy atmosphere Earth had in the beginning. The Colonization took 6000 years/6 Days, not millions or billions of years, and Physical Life has only been in process for 6000 years/6 Days, even if the Earth was here since the birth of our Solar System, which may not be millions and billions of years. 1000 thousands years is as a Day with the Lord/HTA, can be understood with Space/Time differences. Science High Tech is the 'super'natural of Religion; both are about Literal Life as we know it. The loss of High Tech supernatural knowledge caused Man to call it God, Supernatural, Spirits and Spiritual. Man does not need a God to worship with praying hands. God/Life needs Serving and Sharing Hands to keep the Balanced Elements on Spaceship Earth and in a Spaceship.
K.C. STAR, 1/5/91. "Experts discount ideas backing the Big Bang theory of universe" By John Noble Wilford. "A critical element of the widely accepted Big Bang theory about the origin and evolution of the universe is being discarded by some of its staunchest advocates, throwing the field of cosmology into turmoil. According to the Big Bang theory, matter from the explosive moment of cosmic creation originally was evenly spread throughout the universe. But galaxies tend to be clumped together, an awkward fact that astronomers have sought to explain by assuming that cold invisible matter is a major attractive force. The cold dark matter model, as it is called, accounts well for local clustering but could not explain the giant superstructures recently found in galactic surveys, like the "great wall", a string of galaxies stretching across the sky for at least a half billion light-years. A new analysis of a highly accurate survey by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite now shows the universe to be full of such superstructures and companion supervoids. A major problem is that these structures appear to be far too vast to have formed since the Big Bang. The analysis has led a team of British and Canadian scientists to conclude that "there is more structure on large scales that is predicted by the standard cold dark matter theory of galaxy formation". In a report being published Thursday in the journal 'Nature', they said the theory in its current form must be abandoned. - "We're floundering around with lots of ideas", said Dr. Alan Dressler, an astrophysicist at the Carnegie Institution."
K.C. STAR, 4/26/91. "Letters" "Which came first? By Jack Coakley. "In his letter of April 20, Ron Carver states that the universe was created by the big bang 10 to 15 billion years ago, apparently without need for a creator. He also said that religious people, who talk about how God created the universe, are not interested in talking about how God was created. Nor does Mr. Carver tell us how the substance which was involved in the big bang came to be. Either something (the material of the big bang came to be. Either something (the material of the big bang) always existed and created the material of the big bang, or the material of the big bang came out of absolute nothing. I cannot imagine absolute nothing - no, it's not the emptiness of space because that is something. It is the separation between the things of space. Considering the complexity and orderliness of the universe. I prefer to believe that God always existed rather than that mere matter always existed or appeared out of absolute nothing. Regarding the big bang theory, sure, it's possible God used that in the creation of the universe."
K.C. STAR, 4/24/92. "Discovery hailed as 'holy grail'" By Thomas H. Maugh II. Washington - "For the first time, scientists have observed long-sought relics of the big bang, the primeval explosion that created the universe 15 billion years ago. Those relics, massive wisps of gas more than 500 million light years long, are the largest and oldest structures ever observed, astrophysicist George Smoot of California's Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory said Thursday at a meeting of the American Physical Society. The structures answer a question that has puzzled cosmologists for nearly three decades: How did the widely dispersed gases produced by the big bang coalesce into stars and galaxies? It now seems clear, Smoot said, that gravitational forces within those massive ripples in space and time were the driving force, slowly drawing the thin gases into dense clumps that evolved into all matter. "It's one of the major discoveries of the century", said physicist Joel Primack of the University of California, Santa Cruz. "In fact, it's one of the major discoveries of science". Physicist Michael Turner of the University of Chicago said: "The significance of this cannot be overstated. They have found the holy grail of cosmology. If it is, indeed, correct, this certainly would have to be considered for a Nobel Prize".
"The temperature and size of the structures discovered by Smoot and his colleagues also provide strong confirmation of the theory that as much as 90 percent of the matter in the universe is cold, dark matter, which is invisible to the most powerful telescopes but provides such a strong gravitational field that the universe eventually will collapse upon itself in a colossal big bang reversal. Photographs of the structures were taken by instruments aboard NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer, COBE, an astronomical satellite launched into a polar orbit in November 1989. The big bang is perhaps one of the most difficult physics concepts for laymen to accept. Its chief assumption is that 15 billion years ago all matter in the universe was compressed into an unimaginably dense sphere smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. The ball exploded at a temperature of trillions of degrees, launching all the matter on the expansionary course it still follows today. Within the first millionth of a second after the explosion, quarks and other exotic particles formed protons and neutrons. Most of those were just as rapidly annihilated in collisions with antiprotons and antineutrons, releasing their energy in the form of light waves. It is that light, now spread ineffably thin by the continued expansion of the cosmos, that Smoot and his colleagues have been studying with COBE.
"Its faint glow, detected as microwave radiation, corresponds to a temperature of just 2.7 degrees above absolute zero (minus 455 degrees Fahrenheit). This cosmic microwave background radiation was discovered in 1964 by physicists Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of Bell Laboratories, a feat for which they won the 1978 Nobel Prize for physics. But the problem has been that, at the limits of detectability, this background radiation has been found to be uniform throughout the universe in every study conducted over the past 28 years. For stars and other matter to condense from the gaseous cloud formed in the big bang, however, there must have been small irregularities in the density of the matter and in the radiation. Those irregularities would act like "seeds" around which more matter would condense in exactly the same manner that dust particles, for instance, serve as seeds to trigger the condensation of raindrops. Previous failures to find such irregularities have called the big bang theory into question. The discovery by Smoot and his colleagues thus provides a strong measure of support for beleaguered cosmologists who support the theory. Smoot and his colleagues found large regions of the sky in which the temperature was very slightly different, as little as 1/100,000th of a degree, from that of the areas around them.
"Such variations had been predicted by theorists, but had never been observed. Despite the small size of the observed temperature difference, the researchers are confident in its accuracy because it is derived from hundreds of millions of measurements acquired with three separate sets of detectors aboard COBE. The regions encompassed by the variations are immense. The smallest span 500 million light years, about 2.9 billion trillion miles. The largest span two-thirds of the known universe, or 10 billion light years. Until now, the biggest known structure in the universe was a 200-million-light-year-long arc of galaxies called the "great wall". "What we have found solves a major mystery, revealing for the first time the primeval seeds that developed into the modern universe", said cosmologist John C. Mather of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt Md. "It tells us how the universe developed from an almost featureless explosion to something that's been broken up into huge clusters of galaxies and huge empty spaces". The signals the researchers detected originated a mere 300,000 years after the Big Bang. That is "as close to the start as we're ever likely to get", said Goddard astrophysicist Alan Kogut."
"Parade Magazine", June 6, 1993. STAR. "Is There Intelligent Life On Earth?" "What an alien spaceship might reveal about our planet - and ourselves" By Carl Sagan. "You're an alien explorer entering the Solar System after a long journey through the blackness of interstellar space. You examine the planets of this humdrum star from afar - a pretty handful, some gray, some blue, some red, some yellow. You're interested in what kinds of worlds these are, whether their environments are changing and, especially, whether there is life and intelligence. You have no prior knowledge of the Earth. You have just discovered its existence. Let's imagine there's a galactic ethic: Look but don't touch. You can fly by these worlds, you can orbit them, but you are strictly forbidden to land. Under such circumstances, could you figure out what the Earth's environment is like and whether anyone lives there? Your first impression on seeing a picture of the whole Earth is white clouds, white polar caps, brownish continents and some bluish substance that covers two-thirds of the surface. You cannot know beforehand the composition of any of these. When you measure the temperature of this world from the infrared radiation it emits, you find that most latitudes are above the freezing point of water, while the polar caps made of solid water, as well as clouds of solid and liquid water. You might also be tempted to conclude that the blue stuff is vast quantities - kilometers deep - of liquid water. But your last suggestion is bizarre - at least as far as 'this' solar system is concerned, because surface oceans of liquid water exist on none of the other worlds.
"However, when you look in the visible and near-infrared spectrum for telltale signatures of chemical composition, sure enough, you find sufficient water vapor in the air to account for the clouds and just the amount that must exist because of evaporation if the oceans are in fact made of liquid water. The spectrometers also reveal that the air on this world is almost one-fifth oxygen: O/2. No other planet in the Solar System has anything close to so much oxygen. Where does it come from? The intense ultraviolet light from the Sun breaks down water in the high atmosphere into oxygen and hydrogen, and hydrogen quickly escapes to space. This is a source of O/2, certainly, but it doesn't easily account for so much oxygen. Another possibility is that ordinary visible light, of which the Sun puts out so much, is used to break water apart - except that there's no known way to do this without life. There would have to be plants - life forms colored by a pigment that strongly absorbs visible light and that knows how to split water - spread over much of the planet. If you're a good skeptical scientist, the O/2 would be not proof of life but rather the merest hint of life. With all that oxygen, you're not surprised to discover ozone (O/3) in the atmosphere, because ultraviolet light makes ozone out of oxygen (O/2). The ozone then absorbs dangerous ultraviolet radiation. So, if the oxygen is due to life, there's a curious sense in which the life is protecting itself. But this life might be photosynthetic plants. A high level of intelligence is not implied. When you examine the continents more closely, you find there are, crudely speaking, two kinds of regions. One shows the spectrum of ordinary sorts of rocks and minerals found on many worlds.
"The other reveals something unusual: a material - covering vast areas - that strongly absorbs red light. (The Sun shines in light of all colors, with a peak in the yellow.) This pigment is just the sort of thing needed if ordinary visible light is being used to break water apart and account for the oxygen in the air. It's another hint, this time a little stronger, of life - not a bug here and there, but a planetary surface chock full of life. This pigment is, in fact, chlorophyll. It absorbs blue light from the Sun as well as red and is responsible for the fact that plants are green. What you're seeing is a densely vegetated planet. When you look carefully at the infrared spectrum of the Earth, you find many minor constituents of the air. In addition to water, there's carbon dioxide (CO/2), methane (C H/4) and other gases, which absorb the heat that the Earth tries to radiate away to space at night. These gases warm the planet. Without them, the Earth would everywhere be below the freezing point of water. You have discovered this world's greenhouse effect. There's something odd about having methane and oxygen together in the same atmosphere. The laws of chemistry are very clear: When there is an excess of O/2, methane should be entirely converted into H/2/O and CO/2. The process is so efficient that not a single molecule in all the Earth's atmosphere should be methane. But, in fact, you find that one out of every million molecules is methane - an immense discrepancy. What could it mean? The only possible explanation is that methane is being injected into the Earth's atmosphere so quickly that its chemical reaction with O/2 can't keep pace.
"What might be the source of this methane? Maybe it seeps out of the deep interior of the Earth - but Venus and Mars don't have anything like this much methane. The only alternatives are biological. This conclusion makes no assumptions about the chemistry of life on this planet but merely follows from how unstable methane is in an oxygen atmosphere. In fact, the methane arises from such sources as bacteria in bogs, the cultivation of rice, the burning of vegetation, natural gas from oil wells and - I'm trying to put this decorously - bovine flatulence. In an oxygen atmosphere, methane 'is' a sign of life. It's a little disquieting that the intimate intestinal activities of cows should be detectable from interplanetary space when, as we will see, so much of what we consider important and hold dear is not. As an alien scientist flying by the Earth, you would not be able - at this point - to deduce cows, but you would almost certainly deduce life. All the signs of life that we've discussed so far are due to comparatively simple forms. Had your spacecraft flown by the Earth 100 million years ago, in the age of the dinosaurs, when there were no humans and no technology, you would still have seen oxygen and ozone, the chlorophyll pigment and far too much methane. But now your instruments also are finding signs not just of life but of high technology - something that couldn't possibly have been detected 100 million years ago. You are detecting radio transmission from the Earth - at just the frequencies where radio waves begin to leak out of the Earth's ionosphere, which reflects and absorbs radio waves. The signal is modulated (a sequence of ons and offs).
"Your conclusion that the radio transmission is due to technology on Earth holds, no matter what the ons and offs mean: You don't have to decode the message to be sure it 'is' a message. (In fact, the signal is a communications relay from the U.S. Navy to its distant nuclear submarines.) So, as an alien explorer, you would know that at least one of the species of beings on Earth has achieved radio technology. Which ones? The ones that make methane? The ones that make oxygen? The ones whose pigment colors the landscape green? Of somebody else, somebody more subtle, somebody not so readily apparent to a flyby spacecraft? To search for this technological species, you might want to examine the Earth in finer and finer detail - seeking, if not the beings themselves, at least their artifacts. You look first with modest telescopes, so the finest detail you can make out is about 1 or 2 kilometers across. At this level of detail, you can make out no strange formations, no obvious signs of life. You observe a dense atmosphere in motion. The abundant water must evaporate and then rain back down on the ground. The ancient impact craters, apparent on the Earth's nearby Moon, are almost wholly absent. There must, then, be a set of processes whereby new land is created and then eroded away in much less time than the age of this world. Running water is implicated. As you look with finer and finer definition, you find mountain ranges, river valleys and many other indications that this planet is geologically active. There are odd places surrounded by vegetation but which are themselves denuded of plants. They look like discolored smudges on the landscape. (Many of them are in fact large cities, but you'd never be able to prove it unless you looked in finer detail.) -

"But no topsoil means no agriculture. From your orbital perspective, you can see that something has unmistakable gone wrong. The dominant organisms, whoever they are - who have gone to so much trouble to rework the surface - are simultaneously destroying their ozone layer and their forests, eroding their topsoil and performing massive, uncontrolled experiments on the planet's climate. Haven't they noticed what's happening? Are they oblivious to their fate? Are they unable to work together on behalf of the environment that sustains all of them? Perhaps, you think, it's time to reassess the hypothesis that there is intelligent life on Earth."
