I remember reading the eight books of the Anne of Green
Gables series (and two of the Chronicles) and wanting to have a
reference to goto to identify everyplace where a particular character is
mentioned. I noticed that in rereading the first book. There was a mention
of "Billy Andrews" who I think is mentioned in the third book, Anne
of the Island as proposing to Anne. I didn't realize that there
was some foreshadowing of that event in the first book until reading of a
particular incident.
Montgomery brings in so many characters both real in the fictional
Avonlea and also fictional in the fictional Avonlea. What I would like to
do is classify both people and places. For instance, if somebody starts
reading the second book, Anne of Avonlea before the first
book, they might not know where references to the Lake of Shining
Waters comes from or how it received that name from Anne.
My intent, then, is to start by going through each chapter starting with
the first book and building an encyclopedia as I again reread the series.
I might not finish, or I might start putting it on the back burner and
make slow progress. If this resource is helpful, please let me know. I
get a lot of encouragement when people write in to say so. Unfortuantely,
I don't have a forms that makes it easy to send an e-mail. I do have a
link at the bottom that can be used with Netscape and other browsers that
support the "mailto:" convention. If you are using the Lynx browser, you
should be able to hit C to bring up a comment.
Guide to the page
As can be guessed, this page will be under construction for a
long time. I hope to go through eight books of a couple of
hundred pages each. I will try to list at the top of the page how far I
am along in each book in compiling descriptions. This means that if you
want a reference to Rilla Blythe, you are going to have to wait. I would
love to have suggestions on better ways to organize the data, and on any
additions that should be made to a character that I might have missed.
For instance, if you think that I should include some information on
Rachel Lynde that was present in the first chapter after I complete the
chapter, then please tell me so. On the other hand, if you want to me
include that she weighed at least 200 lbs which was not mentioned until
in the last chapters of the first book, please don't tell me unless I
have already passed that point.
Also, if there are links that are listed but don't go anywhere (you click
on a person's name and there is no explanation), be patient I will fill
in descriptions as I go long. In order to make this reference more
complete, I am including links inside of descriptions. In many cases, I
have put the links there in order to make the description easier to keep
track.
Guide to legal matters
I wish I didn't have to do this stuff, but I know how easy it is to copy
HTML documents. Somebody that I knew borrowed a list of weather links
that I have that looked nearly the same and comparing my document with
his, it was easy to see what changes he had made to the links I set up.
This really didn't bother me that much since it really didn't take much
time to get the links.
With this type of work, I do want to make sure that it is
understood that this document belongs to Thomas P.
Grelinger, and that it is work that I have invested with no monetary
compensation. You are free to use this document in the way it is intended
(i.e. to help get a better understanding of the Green Gables series of
Lucy Maud Montgomery). People are encouraged to setup links to this
document and advertise it. If anybody knows of anyone setting up this
document as his/her own work, I would love to be informed.
Nastiness aside...
