Vacation '99 -- Day 2 -- Monday, September 6th

Denver Zoo, Foot of the Mountain Motel in Boulder

Left Colby, KS about 9a.m. Labor Day traffic was very light as we headed westward on I-70. Drove to Denver, arrived at noon, got a little bit lost, ate lunch, found our way to the Zoo, stayed until 4. Shot a few photos, but none worth reproducing, except for the photo about primate evolution at the Zoo. You can visit the Zoo digitally as well as other Denver web sites on the vacation links page. I do very highly recommend the Denver Museum of Natural History, which we visited during an earlier trip. The museum and the zoo are right next to each other.

Left zoo about 4 p.m. with Jan tired and headachy, due to troubles with her contacts.

Drove to Boulder while the ibuprofen set in. Wandered around the CU campus, then stopped at the Front Range Anglers' fly shop, on Broadway. The shop was closed so just peered in windows.

Jan found the Foot of the Mountains Motel in her AAA book, and we lucked into getting the last available room (#18). We couldn't believe we found a place like this, just a few minutes west of the main north/south street of Boulder!

Immediately to the right of this street is the Boulder Creek, a free-stone stream with abandonded mining gear still overhanging the creek.

Here's a scanned series of photos, taken from a postcard I picked up at the front desk.

After checking in, we took a walk down Boulder Creek -- I was excited because we could hear the rushing stream as we opened our room door! I got my feet wet, Jan just hiked. Some folks were swimming, one person was tossing sticks into the water for her dog to retrieve, and one guy was fly fishing! For quite a distance, the stream is paralleled by a paved hiking/running walk, and a very nice city park is also streamside.

After wearing ourselves out, we had supper at BJ's Grill & Microbrewery in the Pearl Street Mall (several blocks of downtown stores, with a central street turned into pedestrian-only walk.) My dinner was dropped just as it arrived at our table, so that earned a free brewski.

We gained an hour coming to Colorado, so Jan was pooped at 8:30.

From my notes: "Jan has been having trouble with her contacts, especially the near-distance one. So, she's been leaving it out. She ain't much of a navigator when she can't read maps! We're going to try to get it polished tomorrow."
