We left our house at 11 a.m., so you can see right off that we're pretty casual about the trip. We started our journey with only one motel reservation, and we just winged it the rest of the time. This is literally how our vacations work -- I drive while Jan cruises thru her AAA books and assorted maps and travel literature. We drive until we find something we want to visit, and then we stop. Here's the place we started our vacation! Victoria, KS. Jan is walking in the foreground. |

We then drove to Hayes, where we found the Sternberg Museum of
Natural History. It has an excellent mammoth skeleton in foyer.
Along with some nice fossils, the museum has two animatronic,
life-sized dinosaurs-- they do surprise you when
they move! One is a T.rex and the other is a medium-sized
plant eater. The Sternberg has many, many touchy-feely and interactive
exhibits for the rug-rats. We didn't take any photos at the Sternberg,
but you can see many photos, and learn about the museum, by visiting
a Sternberg web site.
